The Udaan Biodiversity Park takes you on an exciting journey of discovering the plant kingdom. Tucked away in the Viman Nagar area of Pune, this initiative of the Zensar foundation is a commendable one.

Enter the small park and explore the variety of endemic, fragrant, medicinal (ayurveda), vegetable-bearing, and other plants. This journey will trigger your senses as you touch and feel the leaves, pluck and taste some, crush and smell others.
The signboards (in English, Marathi, and Braille) provide information and instructions (or even warnings, in some cases).

Junior followed every signboard instruction to the T. And he was thrilled about being able to taste and smell the leaves. After all, it isn’t often that one is allowed to pluck a leaf in a botanical garden!

Without giving away too much, I will just list our favorite discoveries of the day: For me, it was the insect-repellant “Citronella grass”, while B couldn’t stop talking about the “Indian borage” plant. Junior was excited about the fragrance and taste of every leaf that he learned about.

The family vote for the best looks would go to the “Devil’s spine” :).

The rocks that were present in this zone earlier have been used to create a rocky landscape. A waterfall and fountain add to the “cool” quotient. And pretty butterflies in the shrubs lend the special effects to a beautiful scene.

If you are looking for an open-air learning space, head to the Udaan Biodiversity Park for an enriching experience.
