A piazza all to yourself?
Well, you can get that and much more! At the charming town of Vigevano, a short train ride away from Milan (~30 minutes).
Hop on to a train from Porta Genova, and you will be transported across green fields and beautiful countryside to the quaint town of Vigevano.
A short walk from the Vigevano train station through cobbled streets took us to the beautiful Piazza Ducale. And we almost had the entire Renaissance-era square to ourselves. Barring a couple of other tourists, there were a few locals in the little cafes and stores.
The Duomo, dedicated to St. Ambrose, is at one end of the square. We walked around, pausing to admire the architecture, and enjoying the complete absence of crowds.
Then, we headed through the strada coperta (covered passageway) towards the Sforzesco castle.
The castle, with a tower, and huge grounds, houses several museums. Leonardo da Vinci spent some time in this castle as a guest.
We relaxed in the castle grounds, while Junior stretched his feet :). Open spaces (especially green) and kids get along SO well! 🙂
A lovely, peaceful getaway. No “must-do” attractions. No crowds. A charming town. A stunning piazza. A majestic old castle and its open grounds. Simple and beautiful.
