[Saputara, Gujarat, India] Discovering the Little Treasures of a Small Hill Station

A journey along winding roads through a verdant forest took us to the small hill station of Saputara. We headed to this little town in the Dang district of South Gujarat after a great break in Silvassa. The route through the Vansda National Park was scenic and more beautiful than we had imagined.

At Saputara, we reveled in the simple pleasures of a small town where you can walk to (almost) any destination. As we discovered the little treasures of the hill town, the vivid colors made a big impression on us.

Shades of Blue at the Lake:
The Saputara Lake is the heart of the town. The water body can be viewed from several locations. After a laid-back morning routine, we got some exercise by renting a paddle boat at the lake. Junior was thrilled to play the role of the captain. Now, his parents were “officially” under his command.

Vibrance of Green in the Pretty Gardens:
If green is your color, head to the Lake Garden, which also has a children’s park. Take a picnic basket along, if you’d like. The Nageshwar Mahadev temple nearby is a quiet place with a pretty view of the lake.
For a touch of other colors, visit the Step Garden. The steps are adorned with flowers in a host of colors.

Magic of Red and White at the Museum:

The Saputara Tribal Museum showcases the life and culture of the numerous tribal communities in the region. The museum was larger than we had expected, and it had several interesting displays. The highlight is the beautiful Warli Art collection. Junior and B were engaged in animated conversation as they discussed the details of every Warli painting.

Hues of Crimson and Orange in the Sky:
I’m always awe-struck by the marvelous hues in the sky at sunrise and sunset. My favorite scene at Saputara was the descent of the sun.
Head to the Sunrise Point near the Jain temple, and gaze at the spectacular painting in the sky. Or take the ropeway to the Sunset Viewpoint. And, at the end of the day, watch the sky light up in myriad tinges of crimson and orange.

Where would you go in Saputara? Which color would you choose?
