Malnad Magic – I: The Verdant Expanses of Sakleshpur

An unexpected break in our regular schedules provided instant fuel for a holiday plan. With the summer heat beating down on most regions in India, an escape to cooler and verdant climes would be a welcome change. We decided to explore the Malnad region of Karnataka. Sakleshpur and Chikmagalur were the chosen destinations. This time we were willing to explore more “remote” locations with “Junior”. It would be his first “homestay” experience in the lap of nature.

A few years ago, during a trip to the popular tourist attractions of Belur-Halebid-Shravanabelagola, we had spent a couple of evenings in the towns of Sakleshpur and Chikmagalur, vowing to return and spend some time in the region.

Energized by a typical Udupi breakfast, we zoomed out of Bangalore along NH-48 via Nelamangala, Kunigal, Hassan, and onward to Sakleshpur town. I had discovered a beautiful homestay during my search on the Internet. Mugilu, owned by a couple, seemed like a great place to chill out for a couple of days. Located about 15 km beyond Sakleshpur town, Mugilu turned out to be much more than PERFECT :).

Sapna and Chandan manage this beautiful homestay set in a coffee estate (Oh, for the love of coffee!). Our cottage was very charming, with a sit-out area providing splendid views of the estate, as well as the hills and meadows in the distance.

Over the next couple of days, we had a delightful time at our best “homestay” experience so far. Full marks to the kind hospitality, the comfortable accommodation, the glorious views, and the delicious food (some unique recipes from Sapna). The icing on the cake? Just adjacent to the homestay, lush green rolling meadows provide the perfect grounds for innumerable walks and magnificent vistas. After dark, dazzling fireflies compete with the stars for a twinkling, sparkling performance.

Our little son had a fantastic time too, running and walking along the meadows, playing with the three friendly dogs at the homestay, and enjoying the outdoors to the greatest extent.

If you love nature, and are looking for a relaxing, rejuvenating getaway, head to Mugilu at Sakleshpur.

Our Itinerary:
